We are a mercury-free practice. However, many people still have silver/mercury fillings in their mouths from years past. These fillings are not particularly pleasing to the eye, and we know that by unavoidable design, silver/mercury fillings ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure. Porcelain inlays and Tooth Colored Restorations (onlays) create fillings that are not only beautiful (or unnoticeable) but also add strength to weakened teeth. These restorations are aesthetically pleasing and very strong thanks to new bonding technologies.

Tooth-Colored Fillings & Restoration

Tooth-colored restorations are created using resin onlays. These resin fittings are custom created and bonded to the tooth, creating a tight fit. Because of this, tooth-colored restoration can be used in situations where a large majority of the tooth has already decayed or chipped. Once applied, the overall structure of the damaged tooth becomes stronger.

Fluoride is often included in the resin used to create tooth-colored restoration. Fluoride can prevent decay and create a long-lasting replacement. Additionally, resin restorations do not have to be placed on or near the gum line creating a healthier environment for your gums.

Benefits Over Silver Fillings

Silver and Mercury fillings are still a common thing from old fillings. Silver and Mercury fillings result in a weaker tooth structure in addition to being displeasing to the eye. Porcelain inlays and Tooth Colored Restorations (onlays) allow for an aesthetically pleasing alternative that also increases the overall stability and strength of the problem teeth.

Replacing Silver Fillings

In order to replace silver fillings with tooth-colored restorations, a two-part appointment must be scheduled.

First Appointment:

During your first appointment, your original silver filling will be removed. Additionally, any additional decay that may have occurred because of the filling will also be treated. Once completed, your dentist will create an impression of your teeth. A model of your teeth is then created and sent to the lab for analysis. Once at the lab, the resin will be placed under the impression of your teeth in order to create natural fitting resin restoration. While this process is taking place, your dentist will place a temporary onlay on the tooth.

Second Appointment:

In the second appointment, the onlay that was placed in the first appointment will be removed by your dentist. Once clear a conditioning gel will be put on your tooth to prep the tooth for the newly fitted onlay. Once ready, a bonding cement is placed on the tooth and a high-intensity light bonds the resin to the tooth. The final step involves the dentist polishing the tooth.

Your teeth are restored to a natural look and feel, they are stronger and the tooth is protected!
